DENTAL FILLINGS

DENTAL fillings

At Oakwood Smiles our goal is to create long lasting, healthy natural looking smiles. To treat a cavity we will remove the decayed portion of your tooth and then "fill" the area on the tooth where the decayed material was removed. This “tooth colored” filling is also called a composite. Composites not only used for restoring decayed teeth, but also for cosmetic improvements by changing the color of the teeth or reshaping disfigured teeth.

One big advantage of using composite fillings is the aesthetics. We can blend shades to create a color nearly identical to your actual tooth. Composite fillings bond to the tooth which helps support the remaining tooth structure.

What Types of Filling Materials Are Available?

Teeth can be filled with gold, porcelain, silver amalgam (which is a mix of mercury, silver, tin, zinc, and copper), glass ionomer, or composite resin. Dr. Gritsiv and Sawyer prefer to use porcelain, glass ionomer, and composite resin.

DENTAL FILLINGS BEFORE & AFTER

DENTAL FILLINGS WHAT TO EXPECT

First, the dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth to be filled. Next, the decayed area will be removed and cleaned. Once we verify all decay has been removed the dentist will clean the cavity of bacteria and debris. After the area has been cleaned a tooth-colored material is applied in layers. Next, we will use a special light to "cure" or harden each layer. Once the multilayering process is completed the dentist will shape the composite material and polish the final restoration.

DENTAL FILLINGS FAQS

What are the Advantages of Composites :

  • Aesthetics – composite fillings can be shaded to match your natural teeth.
  • Support – composite resin is a biocompatible product that bonds to the tooth structure providing additional support.
  • Conservative – composite fillings are a tooth-sparing preparation compared to older “silver” or amalgam fillings.

How Should I Care for My Teeth with Fillings?

Follow standard good oral hygiene by visiting your dentist regularly for cleanings, brushing with a fluoride toothpaste twice daily, and flossing daily.

Will my Tooth Hurt and/or be Sensitive after Dental Fillings?

Tooth sensitivity following placement of a filling can be common. But the sensitivity usually resolves on its own within a few weeks. Pain relievers are generally not required. However, if the sensitivity does not resolve on it’s own within 2-3 weeks or if your tooth is extremely sensitive please give us a call.

Will my Dental Filling Last Forever?

Dental Fillings are long lasting when done correctly and properly cared for with regular dental visits, daily flossing, and twice daily brushing. However, constant pressure from chewing, grinding, or clenching can cause dental fillings to wear away, chip, or crack. If the bond between your natural tooth enamel and the filling breaks down food particles and bacteria can navigate under the filling. This can lead to additional decay in that tooth.
