DENTURE/PARTIAL DENTURE

Dentures

At Oakwood Smiles, we love helping patients smile with confidence. A healthy and attractive smile is especially important for those who have lost all or most of the teeth. Dentures are replacement teeth that are removable. They are designed to look and feel like your natural teeth. We offer two options for dentures: full or partial. Missing teeth take a serious toll on your quality of life. Without a full set of teeth, chewing, smiling, and speaking can become difficult and embarrassing. Fortunately, dentures offer a way to replace several missing teeth or an entire row of teeth.

Dentures are not the only solution for patients who have experienced tooth loss. In many cases, dental implants can be placed instead and offer many benefits over dentures. We are happy to discuss your oral health goals and determine which option would be the best fit for you.

You can choose partial, full, or implant-supported dentures to restore the function and aesthetics of your smile.

Complete Denture – If you have lost all of your teeth, a complete denture can replace all of your missing teeth. This type of denture can be made once the healing process is completed. We use higher quality materials for the acrylic and the teeth when making the denture. We will take the necessary time to follow each step carefully to give patients a superior quality product. In the case of complete denture, patient will have an opportunity to see, change, approve the appearance of the denture before it is finalized in the laboratory.

Immediate Denture – Our patients also have an option of immediate denture. After extraction of the remaining teeth, the denture is placed in the mouth. This can be achieved with the impression (mold) of the moth taken a couple of weeks before the extractions appointment. This method eliminates any edentulous period toothlessness but may require more adjustments after the denture is delivered.

Partial Denture – If you have only a few teeth missing and you are not a candidate for a Fixed Bridge or Dental Implants, a good way to replace these missing teeth is a partial denture. The smaller base of a partial denture is designed to match the color of the gums, and the teeth are created to closely resemble existing teeth in your mouth. Our partials are made of metal and plastic. Metal framework with clasps fit around anchored teeth give them a more stable hold. The plastic (acrylic) part is molded around the metal framework for retention of replacement teeth and better, more comfortable fit. You will chew better, look better and have a healthier mouth.

Implant-Supported Dentures – these differ in that instead of forming a seal with your gum tissue to stay in place, implants are inserted into the jawbone and then the denture is attached to the implants. Each implant is surgically placed into the jaw and your dentures are affixed to the implants for ease of use, comfort, and durability.

Advantages of Dentures:

  • Dentures can enhance your quality of life by improving the ability to eat comfortably, speak clearly, and smile with confidence.
  • Improve the appearance of sunken cheeks with the support of dentures.
  • Prevent jawbone recession with implant-supported dentures.

Dentures WHAT TO EXPECT

It is also important for patients to know the entire process of fitting dentures. After your dental examination we will take molds of your teeth to create a custom denture. The dentist will use bite molds to confirm your biting action is appropriately aligned. After that, the dentist will set your new teeth in wax so you can see how the final work will look and feel. Finally, the dentures are fitted to your gums.

Often it takes patients a little time to adjust to dentures. For the first few days dentures may feel to heavy or large in your mouth. This is a normal feeling but your tongue, mouth, and facial muscles will quickly begin to adapt to the dentures.

It may take several weeks from your first denture fitting to the day where you will feel completely comfortable wearing dentures. Please be sure to keep your dental appointments over the next one to two months so we can ensure that the dentures are fitted appropriately and stay in good condition.

Dentures FAQS

How Do I Care For My Dentures?

Dentures require care just like your natural teeth. We recommend you brush your dentures daily, using soft bristled brush, to reduce the build-up of plaque and tartar. Even patients with a full set of dentures need to brush their tongue and gums to help keep your mouth healthy. We also recommend rinsing your dentures after meals to help keep them clean.

Do I Need to Use Special Products to Keep My Dentures Clean?

Yes, some products can be too harsh so be sure to check with our team to see which denture cleaner they recommend.

My Dentures are Broken, Can I Continue Wearing Them?

Accidents happen. But if you have broken dentures it’s important to get this corrected. Continuing to wear a broken denture can cause harm and irritation in your mouth.
