TOOTH EXTRACTIONS AND WISDOM TEETH

tooth extractions and wisdom teeth

There are many dental procedures available today to save or repair problem teeth but there are situations when removing the tooth is the only solution to the problem.

The shape of the human mouth is often too small to accommodate wisdom teeth that make their first appearance in young adults between the ages of 15 to 25. When wisdom teeth fully erupt the teeth can become crowded because of lack of space. If the wisdom teeth are partially erupted they become breeding grounds for bacteria and germs as it is often difficult to keep the area clean. This situation may cause reoccurring infections and destruction of the adjacent teeth. If the wisdom tooth stays inside your bone it can develop an abscess that must be treated immediately to prevent infection from spreading to the rest of the body.

Why Take Them Out?

Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars in the back of your mouth. They usually come in between the ages of 15 and 25. We use X-rays to monitor their position and progress thru the years. Most people have them removed for one of these reasons:

  • They are impacted. Wisdom teeth may not come in normally because they're so far back in your mouth. They can be trapped in your jawbone or gums, which can be painful and might lead to an abcess.
  • They come in at the wrong angle causing them to press against your adjacent teeth.
  • Your mouth isn’t big enough to accommodate an extra set of molars.
  • Tooth decay or gum disease. Many people are not be able to reach their wisdom teeth properly with their toothbrush or dental floss which creates a breading ground for bacteria and decay.

tooth extractions and wisdom teeth FAQS

Will Anesthesia be Used?

Yes! We will use a local numbing option. Dr. Gritsiv will numb your mouth with an injection of local anesthetic such as novocaine, lidocaine or mepivicaine. You may also breathe nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, to relax during surgery. You should feel alert again shortly afterward.

Can I Drink Water After Tooth Extraction?

Yes. Drinking fluids is okay after a tooth extraction, but do not use a straw. It is VERY important that you avoid using straws or sucking on anything after a tooth extraction. It is also important to avoid smoking. Using straws, sucking on candy/food, and smoking can dislodge the important and protective blood clot in the socket and cause a painful dry socket.

Should I Do Anything Differently After the Extraction?

You should use an ice pack on your face to help with swelling and gently open and close your mouth to exercise your jaw. We recommend you eat soft foods like pasta, rice, or soup and drink plenty of fluids (do not use a straw). Do not rinse your mouth too harshly as this can dislodge the clot that forms in the extraction site to help in your healing. Many patients find rinsing gently with saltwater beneficial. Please continue to take the medications your doctor prescribes to ease pain/swelling and prevent infection. If you have a fever or if your pain and swelling doesn’t improve please call your doctor.
